Data Sources and Licences
The maps and charts in Cavalry are built on data published by other people.
This page lists every such source, what we use it for, and the terms it comes
under. Some of these entries are conditions of a licence we have to meet; the
rest are acknowledgements we give because the publisher asks for them. Each
row says which it is.
Licence conditions
We are required to give this attribution. It is a condition of the licence
the data is published under, not a courtesy.
GeoNames
Required attribution
- What we use it for
- City and facility coordinates: the positions companies and their sites are drawn at on the map.
- Licence
-
Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International
(CC BY 4.0).
Attribution is a condition of that licence, and this page is where we give it.
- Source
- geonames.org
Acknowledgements
These sources do not require attribution the way the licence above does. We
name them because the publisher asks to be credited, or simply because you
should be able to see where the picture came from.
NASA GIBS
Courtesy credit
- What we use it for
- Basemap imagery: the satellite photography the world map is drawn on.
- Terms
- NASA Global Imagery Browse Services. NASA imagery is generally free to use; NASA asks to be credited, and we do.
ASTER GDEM
Requested acknowledgement
- What we use it for
- Terrain relief: the shading that gives the map its mountains and valleys.
- Acknowledgement
- ASTER GDEM is a product of METI and NASA.
Natural Earth
Courtesy credit
- What we use it for
- Country boundaries: the borders and coastlines drawn over the imagery.
- Terms
- Public domain. No permission is needed and no credit is required; we name it anyway so the boundaries can be traced back to their source.
